The Challenge of Amazon’s Plastic Waste in the US

Amazon, the e-commerce giant, has been under scrutiny for its plastic waste management practices in the United States. Despite making promises to reduce plastic packaging, a recent report by the nonprofit organization Oceana revealed that Amazon’s plastic waste in the US has actually increased. In 2022 alone, the company generated a staggering 208 million pounds of plastic waste, a nearly 10 percent jump from the previous year. This amount of plastic waste is equivalent to circling Earth over 200 times with plastic air pillows.

While Amazon claims to have reduced its use of plastic packaging globally by 11.6 percent in 2022, the US remains a major concern. The lack of transparency in reporting the amount of plastic waste generated by Amazon is a significant issue. The company’s latest sustainability report does not provide a breakdown of plastic waste by country, nor does it account for plastic waste from third-party sellers. Oceana had to rely on market data and public statements from Amazon to conduct its analysis.

In response to Oceana’s report, Amazon’s vice president of mechatronics and sustainable packaging, Pat Lindner, dismissed the findings as “misleading” and “exaggerated.” He highlighted the company’s efforts to eliminate plastic delivery packaging from its automated fulfillment centers in the US. Amazon has already phased out single-use plastic bags in Europe and India, but the transition has been slower in the US. The company recently replaced plastic delivery packaging with paper alternatives in an Ohio fulfillment center in 2023.

One of the main challenges with plastic waste is that plastic film bags, commonly used for packaging, are not accepted in curbside recycling programs. These bags are more difficult to recycle compared to plastic bottles, and consumers are required to seek out designated drop-off locations to properly dispose of them. Amazon’s commitment to phasing out plastic packaging in favor of recyclable alternatives is a step in the right direction, but more concrete actions and timelines are necessary.

Oceana is urging Amazon to take more decisive action in reducing plastic waste, particularly in its largest market, the US. The organization emphasizes the need for transparency in reporting plastic waste data and calls for the complete elimination of plastic packaging in Amazon’s home base. As consumers become more conscious of the environmental impact of plastic waste, it is essential for corporations like Amazon to prioritize sustainable practices and provide long-term solutions to plastic pollution.

The issue of Amazon’s plastic waste in the US is a complex and multifaceted challenge that requires collaboration between stakeholders at all levels. While progress has been made in reducing plastic packaging globally, there is still much work to be done in the US market. By implementing transparent reporting measures, phasing out plastic packaging, and investing in sustainable alternatives, Amazon can lead the way in addressing the growing plastic waste crisis.
