The world of commercial space flight is rapidly evolving, with companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic leading the way. However, there are new players entering the market that are offering a unique experience to customers who are looking to explore the Earth from a different perspective. Three startups – Zephalto, Space Perspective, and World View, are all looking to take tourists to the stratosphere using pressurized capsules and massive gas-filled balloons.

Unlike traditional rocket-powered space tourism, these companies are offering passengers a more serene experience that is similar to being on an airplane. The balloon rides will last around 6 hours, and while passengers will not reach actual space (which is around 50 miles above the Earth’s surface), they will still get to enjoy breathtaking views from heights of 15 to 19 miles above the Earth’s surface.

Each capsule is designed to carry eight customers and two crew members, with amenities such as a center bar and a bathroom. Vincent Farret d’Astiès, the founder and chief pilot at Zephalto, emphasized that there are no physical requirements to board the balloon, making it accessible to anyone who can board a standard plane. Additionally, the companies have seen promising consumer interest, with thousands of tickets already sold at varying price points.

Jane Poynter, the founder and co-CEO of Space Perspective, challenges the traditional definition of space by stating that there is no universal definition. According to her, once the capsule goes over 98,000 feet, it qualifies as a spaceship and passengers are essentially in a vacuum above 99% of Earth’s atmosphere. This unique perspective allows travelers to witness the deep black of the sky and experience a sense of awe that is unmatched by any other form of travel.

While Zephalto has conducted crewed tests, the other companies are still working towards launching their commercial services. With ticket prices ranging from $50,000 to $184,000 per seat, the cost of these experiences may be prohibitive for some consumers. However, for those who are willing to invest in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the chance to travel to the stratosphere and witness the beauty of our planet from above is truly priceless.

As the space tourism industry continues to grow and evolve, these new players are offering a unique alternative to traditional rocket-powered flights.
