Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, was arrested by French police at an airport near Paris for alleged offenses related to his popular messaging app. The Franco-Russian billionaire was detained at Le Bourget airport after arriving from Baku, Azerbaijan. The French authorities issued an arrest warrant for Durov in connection to a preliminary investigation into offenses such as fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and terrorism promotion. One of the investigators expressed surprise that Durov had come to Paris despite knowing he was a wanted man.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Durov revealed that the idea for launching an encrypted messaging app came after facing pressure from the Russian government while working at VK, a social network he founded and later sold before leaving Russia in 2014. He attempted to settle in various cities before choosing Dubai due to its business-friendly environment and neutrality. He claimed that the platform had over 900 million active users at the time.
