Tesla, the well-known electric vehicle maker, recently settled a racist discrimination lawsuit in which a federal jury awarded $3.2 million in damages to Owen Diaz, a Black man who worked as an elevator operator at its Fremont, California factory in 2015. The terms of the settlement are confidential, but the attorney representing Diaz, Lawrence Organ, emphasized the importance of standing up against discrimination in the workplace. The settlement comes amidst ongoing allegations of racist discrimination and harassment of Black workers at Tesla.
Despite the settlement with Owen Diaz, Tesla is currently facing a proposed class action lawsuit, Marcus Vaughn v. Tesla Inc., which alleges that racist discrimination and harassment of Black workers has persisted at the company. Lawrence Organ, the attorney representing current and former Tesla employees in this lawsuit, expressed concern over the lack of action from Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, in addressing the issue of discrimination within the company. He emphasized the need for a clear statement and commitment from Musk to combat discriminatory behavior in the workplace.
In addition to the lawsuits filed by individual employees, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has also sued Tesla, accusing the automaker of violating federal law by tolerating racial harassment of its Black employees and retaliating against those who oppose such behavior. Tesla has refuted these allegations, claiming that they do not reflect the company’s commitment to equal employment opportunities. The legal battles and allegations highlight the ongoing struggle for racial equality and inclusion in the workplace.
Testimonies from employees, including Owen Diaz, reveal troubling instances of racial discrimination at Tesla.
