Air Quality in Schools: Strategies for Improvement

The issue of air quality in schools is a growing concern, with many educational institutions located in areas where air pollution levels exceed WHO limits. According to a recent study conducted by the University of Surrey, addressing this issue is crucial for the health and well-being of students and teachers alike.

The study suggests that using air purifiers during the school day and opening windows after hours can significantly improve air quality in classrooms. By alternating between these two methods, schools can reduce levels of pollution and create a healthier learning environment for students.

Researchers at the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) monitored pollution levels in two classrooms at an infant school in Guildford, UK, located near a busy road. They found that the combination of air purifiers and scheduled window openings led to the most significant improvements in air quality, with a notable reduction in coarse particle pollution and carbon dioxide levels.

Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that schools adopt a tailored approach to improving air quality. While opening windows may not always be practical, combining this strategy with the use of air purifiers can be an effective solution. This approach can help schools create a cleaner and healthier environment for students and teachers.

As Professor Prashant Kumar, director of GCARE, emphasizes, the need to address air quality in schools is urgent. Millions of children around the world are exposed to poor quality air while they learn, putting their health at risk. By implementing simple yet effective strategies, schools can make a significant impact on the well-being of their students and contribute to a healthier future for all.
