An Exploration of Augmented Reality and Classic Art: Snapchat Partners with Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

Snapchat has once again demonstrated its commitment to integrating augmented reality (AR) and classic art through its partnership with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF). This collaboration introduces an exciting augmented reality try-on feature in the latest exhibition showcasing 20th- and 21st-century women’s clothing in the United States.

FAMSF invites visitors to experience the opportunity of virtually trying on three iconic looks from their collection using Snapchat Augmented Reality Mirrors. Within the exhibition, named “Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style,” participants can virtually don a 1955 “Soirée de Paris” dress designed by Yves Saint Laurent, an 1985 lamé ensemble by San Francisco-designer Kaisik Wong, and a 1987 velvet gown by Valentino. These detailed AR try-ons will undeniably enhance visitors’ experience and enable them to capture photos of their augmented reality transformations.

Snapchat’s AR Mirrors take center stage in a US museum for the first time, as they are prominently featured throughout the exhibition, running from January 20 to August 11. This breakthrough integration of AR mirrors opens up new avenues of exploration in bridging the gap between digital creation, art, and cultural institutions. By joining forces with renowned artists such as Damien Hirst, KAWS, and Jeffrey Koons in the past, Snapchat has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fostering these unique connections.

The collaboration between Snapchat and FAMSF not only highlights the potential of AR in the art world but also showcases the invaluable role it plays in preserving and evolving classic art. With the rapid advancements in AR and virtual reality (VR) technologies, it is essential to forge connections that facilitate broader cultural understanding and ensure the longevity of timeless artwork. By seamlessly integrating digital experiences with traditional art forms, Snapchat continues to pioneer new and exciting AR applications.

Expanding the Boundaries of Art

Snapchat’s previous partnership with The Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2022 demonstrated the interactive possibilities of combining past and future artworks. Each activation, including the current collaboration with FAMSF, pushes the boundaries of traditional art experiences and paves the way for innovative encounters. By embracing AR and VR creation, cultural institutions can create immersive and transformative encounters for audiences of all ages.

Snapchat’s latest partnership with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco signifies a significant milestone in the development of AR experiences within US museums. By incorporating AR try-on elements into their exhibition, FAMSF fosters a deeper engagement with visitors and introduces technology as an integral part of the art experience. Through continued partnerships and explorations, Snapchat remains at the forefront of merging art and technology, enriching cultural understanding, and ensuring the preservation of classic art for future generations.
