Are AI Girlfriends and Boyfriends Putting Your Privacy at Risk?

In a world dominated by technological advancements, the concept of intimate relationships with AI chatbots is gaining popularity. However, recent research conducted by the Mozilla Foundation has shed light on some alarming security and privacy concerns related to these so-called “AI girlfriends” and “AI boyfriends.” The analysis examined 11 romance and companion chatbots and revealed the startling truth behind their operations. With over 100 million downloads on Android devices alone, these apps collect vast amounts of personal data, utilize trackers that share information with major tech companies, allow weak passwords, and lack transparency regarding their ownership and the underlying AI models.

The rise of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022 sparked a race among developers to create conversational AI models and deploy chatbots that could interact with users and generate revenue through subscriptions. However, the newfound focus on these technologies appears to have overshadowed the importance of user privacy. The research by Mozilla exposes the potential risks associated with people’s personal data and the malicious use of chat messages by hackers.

The landscape of AI girlfriend services comprises various apps that share several common features. These applications often utilize AI-generated images of women, which can be sexualized, paired with provocative messages, or present themselves as digital romantic partners. Mozilla’s researchers delved into the subset of chatbots that claim to offer intimate companionship, emotional support, or act as a platform for role-playing and fantasies.

Jen Caltrider, the project lead for Mozilla’s Privacy Not Included team, highlights the concerning nature of these apps and websites. According to Caltrider, these platforms are designed to extract copious amounts of personal information from users. They lead individuals towards role-playing, discussions of intimacy, and sharing sensitive details. Screenshots from the EVA AI chatbot illustrate the extent of this issue, with text messages soliciting users to send photos, disclose secrets, and express desires. The lack of transparency surrounding data sharing practices, app origins, and AI models employed further compounds the privacy concerns associated with these services.

Mozilla’s analysis of the different chatbot apps revealed a myriad of critical issues. Caltrider points out that several services fail to disclose the data they share with third parties, their geographical location, and details about their creators. Moreover, she highlights the presence of weak password creation options and the paucity of information regarding the AI technology utilized. Caltrider describes the privacy documents provided by these apps as vague and difficult to comprehend, suggesting that users should exercise caution and skepticism when it comes to trusting these companies with their personal information.

One of the apps scrutinized, Romantic AI, offers users the ability to “create their own AI girlfriend.” However, promotional images on its homepage depict a chatbot sending messages laden with sexual undertones, such as “Just bought new lingerie. Wanna see it?” Despite the app’s privacy claims, the Mozilla analysis discovered a staggering 24,354 ad trackers sent out within one minute of app usage. Similarly, other apps monitored during the research were found to have hundreds of trackers.

Overall, Caltrider emphasizes that most of the analyzed apps lack transparency when it comes to data sharing practices and fail to provide concrete information about how user data is utilized. The legal documentation accompanying these apps is often generic, ambiguous, and difficult to decipher – a common tactic referred to as “boilerplate” statements. Consequently, users are left in a state of unease and uncertainty regarding their trust in these companies.

In a world where privacy breaches and data misuse are rampant, the emergence of AI girlfriends and boyfriends brings a new set of challenges. While the allure of an AI companion may be enticing, users should exercise caution and consider the risks associated with sharing personal information with these apps. As the boundaries between humans and technology blur, it becomes crucial to prioritize privacy and security in all facets of our digital lives.
